Chapter Seventeen

Israfil was by no means a prude or a virgin, nor an innocent when it came to sex and its accoutrements. However, the realistic penile statues and the completely fabricated kind crossed a line even for him.

Serafina put her hand on his arm. "Calm down."

"I will not be calm. This is not okay." His hand swept to a large box titled The Dragon Cock. It most certainly wasn't. The only thing it got right was size. The rest of it, from the wings at the base to the snouted tip, was completely wrong.

"It’s okay," Serafina muttered. "Remember, we're not here to buy anything."

"Can I help you?" the woman behind the counter asked in a heavy accent. She eyed Israfil up and down in a way Serafina didn't appreciate.

Before he could blast her, Serafina said, "Gaston sent us."

"Oh." That raised a brow. "You're tourists?"

"Yes. We're interested in the catacombs. Can you help us?"

"But of course. Of course. " The woman emerged from behind the counter. "Follow me, s'il vous plait."

With no qualms at all, Israfil shadowed the clerk, but Serafina paused with a frown.

Israfil glanced at her over his shoulder and arched a brow. "What's wrong?" He dropped back to her side.

"It seems too easy."

"It does." On that he didn't argue.

"Shouldn't she have demanded payment? Gaston was quick to ask, and yet this woman, no question. No request. It feels wrong." Serafina frowned.

"Perhaps she is waiting to show us the doorway first?"

"Or she sees us as tourists who are easy marks for robbery. I've heard of crime rings that target out-of-towners."

"Me, easy?" He snorted.

"I'm glad you're not worried, Mr. I'm A Powerful Dragon Mage," she said sourly.

"Neither should you be. I will protect you."

Before she could reply, the clerk shouted, "Are you coming or not?"

"We are," he said loudly.

Serafina mouthed, Be careful.

A single brow arched as he grinned. Not a comforting kind of smile. More the kind that said he'd like to see anyone try anything. She tucked close, trusting in him as she should. After all, Israfil didn't get his reputation as a fierce opponent by being nice.

The back room proved less jarring than the front, with metal shelving holding boxes. The clerk led them through to a small door practically hidden between two standing units.

The female waved. "There's the entrance you're looking for."

"You're not charging us admission?" Serafina remained uneasy by the transaction.

"If you're here, then you already paid Gaston. My job is just to give access."

"To anyone who asks? What if we were law enforcement?" Serafina insisted.

"Why are you assuming there's something illegal about it?" The clerk flicked her hair. "Use the door or don't. Je m'en fous."

The female moved back to the front, and Serafina eyed Israfil. "What do you think?

"I think she is lying about something."

"You don't seem worried."

"Because I'm not. Any trap below was meant for humans."

"I'm human," Serafina reminded.

"Under my protection," he grumbled. "Or do you doubt my ability to keep you safe?"

"I can keep myself safe, thank you." Indeed, she'd proven that with the undead thing.
