Luke was still euphoric from his lovemaking with Miranda, but as he headed out into the ranch to check on matters, he realized he was worried about her for more than one reason.

Maybe her mysteriousness is losing some of its novelty, he thought, but he knew he wasn’t angry with her. It seemed like the more time he spent with her, the more complex she became. Luke wanted to trust in the feelings that had enveloped him since the moment Miranda had come into his life, but it was difficult when he knew that he didn’t have the whole truth.

She’s not lying to me, he reasoned as he made his way into the stables. Lou looked up from where he was grooming one of the horses, his brow knit with some surprise.

“Well look who it is!” he chortled. “I was beginning to worry that we would have to send a search party into that house looking for you.”

Luke laughed.

“I’ve been distracted,” he said, winking coyly. “In case you hadn’t noticed.”

Lou maintained the smile on his face, but he seemed confused.

“I can see that,” the hand replied, dropping the brush and turning his full attention on Luke. “I just haven’t been able to figure out with what.”

Really? He hasn’t even gotten a glimpse of Miranda?

“I think you can guess,” Luke snickered, wiggling his eyebrows. “I’ve been in the company of a very lovely blonde.”

Lou looked startled at the response.

“She’s been up at the house with you all this time?” he asked, blinking. A wry, devious grin formed on Lou’s lips. “Then I guess y’all haven’t left the bedroom much, have ya?”

“A gentleman never kisses and tells,” he said, and Lou hooted.

“I guess you ain’t much of a gentleman since you brought it up in the first place,” he joked. His face went serious. “But honestly, I wouldn’t have known that you had company.”

“It was the woman I came up with the other day,” Luke told him, wondering if Luke was pulling his leg. “The pretty one.”

Lou stared at him.

“I didn’t see you with a woman the other day,” he replied.

“Sure you did. The day of the horse show.”

Lou shook his head.

“If she was with you, I didn’t see her,” he insisted. Luke frowned.

How could he have missed her? He looked right at her.

He thought about how Miranda seemed to have vanished in front of him earlier.

It’s probably her fair coloring in the sunlight, he reasoned, but Luke could not shake the sense of unease that gripped his stomach.

“I’m sure you’ll meet her eventually,” Luke said, even though he was not sure of that at all. “She’s a bit shy.”

Lou nodded, but he did not lose the peculiar expression on his face.

“I can’t wait,” he said. He nodded toward the other horses. “I should get back to it.”

“Me too,” Luke sighed. “I’ve been out of the loop.”

“For good reason!”

The men shared another laugh, and Luke wandered through the stables, pausing to check on the equines before heading out to the corrals. He
