Simon coughed as bile rose in his throat. The scent of damp and decay, along with the acrid odor of vinegar, filled his nostrils. He’d been grabbed from behind by two men, and a cloth had been placed over his nose once they were out of sight. He blinked in the darkness and sat up, even as his head swam. His clothing was drenched, and he realized that was where the smell of the vinegar came from. He rubbed his temples as he wondered what it could mean. The floor below him was dirt, and the stones around him were covered in mud and mildew. A single candle lit the room he was in, which seemed to be part of an old dungeon. That gave him a clue, but the only window sat far too high for him to see out of it, so he had no way of verifying his location.

“Sorry about the vinegar. I don’t like it any more than you do.”

Simon looked up as Edgar emerged from the shadows. The prince held a pistol in his hand and kept it aimed at Simon.

“Care to explain why I’m drenched in vinegar?” Simon asked as he tried to peer into the other shadows of the room.

“I couldn’t have your dragon sniffing you out too easily,” Edgar said.

Simon felt bile rising in his throat again. If the vinegar did mask his scent, how would his mate find him? He lifted his chin, though, determined not to let Edgar get to him. “Taking me will only make him angry. He won’t back down simply because you have me. Hiding my scent will slow him down, perhaps, but it won’t stop him.”

“Slowing him down is all I need for now,” Edgar said.

“What do you hope to accomplish? The people already dislike you. What do you think will happen when they hear you disrupted Christopher’s mate vow?”

“I don’t need them to like me.”

Simon leaned his head back against the wall, wondering if he could trick Edgar into revealing his plan. The arrogant man did love to talk. “So you want them to fear you?”

“Fear is a better tool than most think. I’m sure your mate is making all kinds of mistakes now out of fear. The look on his face when I spoke to you after his petition told me all I needed to know about how to control him.” Edgar eyed him. “If I had time to clean you up, and if I didn’t hate you so much, I’d fuck you. Just to see the look on his face when I tossed you back to him with my scent all over you.”

Simon narrowed his gaze. Jothen had his share of dalliances with both sexes, but Simon didn’t believe Edgar was attracted to men in the slightest. But of course, rape wasn’t about desire—it was about power, especially for scum like him. “I’m not afraid of you or anything you might do to me.”

Edgar laughed. “It’s not about you. It’s about him. He’s going to regret trying to usurp me.
