ELEVEN

Like the stairs, the basement was made out of rock. Siena felt cold even under her jacket, and she rubbed her arms as she studied her surroundings. The room was wide, and it reminded her of her parent’s study. An old desk faced the wall by one corner near a bookshelf full of tomes and papers stacked at random. Another shelf stood on the opposite wall, this one filled with jars of all sizes. Several ropes filled with hanging herbs crisscrossed one of the last two corners, although Siena wasn’t sure how they’d ever dry in this basement.

No rugs or carpets covered the floor. It appeared to have been made of pure bedrock, slightly polished but not enough to become slippery. Different patterns had been carved into it, forming circular and straight gouges meant to be filled by different potions with an empty space in the middle.

Standard stuff for high-level witches who operated from home, Siena thought as she studied the designs with professional curiosity. Taking photos of another witch’s work area was a big no-no, so she tried to memorize the patterns to write down later.

The stupidity of what she was doing suddenly smacked her like a fist to the face. Why was she being curious about a witch’s floor designs and ignoring the elephant in the room?

Why was Adrian Vel, dragon shifter and known witch-hater, standing in a powerful witch’s house?

“Why are we here?” Siena asked sharply, retreating toward the base of the steps.

“Stay,” Adrian barked. He turned to the witch. “Well?”

Siena put a foot on the first step. “Answer.”

Adrian stormed back to her and pulled her to the circles on the floor. “I just need to get a spell done, then we’ll be on our way.”

“Careful with the lines, my dear,” the witch warned in a sugary sweet voice.

Siena looked down and realized that a potion already filled some of the gouges. A transparent blackish color, they’d gone unnoticed in her first study of the designs. Unfortunately, the color in itself told her nothing. In a witch’s world, black did not mean evil, just as milky-white did not mean goodness.

Staying inside a spell’s circle was always a bad idea, though, so she stepped outside the filled lines.

“Your blood,” the witch said.

Siena’s attention snapped to the duo. The witch was holding out an athame with one hand and pointing at a wooden bowl on the table with the other.

Without comment, Adrian picked the blade and sliced his hand with a clean slide of the blade. He formed a fist, and blood dripped down into the bowl.

“You jerk,” Siena exclaimed, shocked. That was her blood!

Adrian grunted, then licked the blood off his palm rather than using something to clean it.

Double jerk, Siena thought, still in disbelief.

The witch took back the athame and offered it to Siena. “I need your blood.”

“Huh?”

“Your blood,” the witch said impatiently.

Blood was powerful stuff. There was a whole highly illegal underground market solely dedicated to selling shifter blood. Wasn’t she here just because a single
