Berin, Creedy, and the other adults prepared for a possible siege by Prince Harald, and the young dragonseers and their dragons helped. The Clockwork Corridors were closed for now, and the only news came from Hilda as she brought more supplies through the hidden canal.

On the second day, Berin called everyone together again. She looked serious.

“Prince Harald is doing what he promised,” she said. “He’s organized a group to search the city, building by building, looking for the Guild Hall.”

Mira and the others gulped.

“Will he find us?” asked Tom.

“No,” said Berin. “We’ll keep the secret passageways closed from now on, so there will be no way to get in. The underground canal comes out at a point far from the city center, where no one will find it. We’ll just wait until they get tired of searching.”

“How will we know?” asked Cara. “If we can’t get in or out?”

Berin nodded. “Vice Chancellor?”

Vice Chancellor Creedy stepped forward. Creedy was a stern, grumpy man and was usually scowling or making sharp comments about the children’s dragon-riding skills. He was dragging a metal stand. Behind him came Daisy, the combat instructor, bouncy and jolly in green leggings so bright they almost glowed. She carried a massive silver bowl of water. Creedy positioned the stand, and Daisy placed the bowl on top.

“You will all be quiet,” he announced in a harsh voice. Berin’s lips twitched as if hiding a smile. He ignored everyone and bowed his head. After a few seconds, his dragon appeared.

Creedy’s dragon was called Nightwatcher. She was large and a shining charcoal black. Even her teeth and tongue were black. The only color was in her eyes, which were bright red.

The children took a half step back.

Nightwatcher stretched her neck and peered into the silver bowl, closed her red eyes, and breathed gently on the water. It rippled and glowed. And then, against the back wall of the Guild Hall cavern, an image appeared.
