Chapter 5

Buried in Snow

Quinn

The next day I immediately went to the servants’ quarters to ask what my duties were. If I was going to have a chance at saving the stragglers for good, I needed to impress the council with hard work. The head servant explained that as Catherine’s handmaiden, I’d be staying by her side, only leaving when I’m told that my duties are done for the day or when my business takes me elsewhere.

“So, just keep doing what I’ve been doing then?” I concluded.

“I’d still recommend getting the hang of navigating the palace. You don’t want to get lost when your lady is depending on you,” the head servant suggested.

Taking his advice, I lapped the halls, committing the locations and directions of the rooms to my memory. Eventually I came upon the chapel. Eliott had told me that I was an oracle, but was that true? I did have strange visions, but they’d never been particularly helpful. What did the ones about dragons mean? Would they come back from extinction? I had seen one not too long ago. Although, that was under the assumption that what I saw was real.

Hoping to find some answers from those dedicated to my alleged creators, I pushed open the doors. Empty pews led up to an altar with an orb on it. Several paintings depicted gods striking down dragons. Behind the altar, a giant mural depicted the winter god Boreas ripping off the wings from the ice dragon Niflheim. The room was empty save for a few people praying by themselves in silence.

As soon as I stepped inside, the orb on the altar flickered. I backed up, wondering what it was doing. The followers glanced at the disturbance before ignoring it. Suddenly a beam of blue light flashed beside me, and an image of Eliott appeared.

“Hello, Quinn, so glad you decided to visit the chapel. We don’t get many visitors since the prince has been trying to get this place demolished. I haven’t the foggiest idea why.”

“Eliott? Why are you projecting yourself here?” I asked.

“Well, there’s practically no trace of the gods left, so those who still believe in them come to me for guidance as someone made directly by them. However, not just anyone can enter my tower, and I’m bound by a curse to stay inside of it. So, this is the best I can do.”

“Oh, right. I remember Catherine mentioning something like that.”

“Anyway, I’m assuming you came here for a little divine guidance. But we should move somewhere with less ears to listen.” Eliott’s apparition began walking, so I followed. “This chapel used to be a place of sanctuary. Disturbing this place, no matter who you were, would end with you being punished by the gods. Sacrifices and tributes were brought here to the altar, which would grant you an audience to plead to. If you appeased them enough to grant your request, you could have something as wonderful as an enchanted artifact that they created.”

“Are there still artifacts like that today?”

“There are.
