“What do…?”

“Shush!” She barked then immediately added in an infinity softer tone, “Only mind to mind. Only this bond.”

“Gotcha.”

With a swipe of her hand, the enchanted screen disappeared. Letting her hand slide across the back of Stone’s to be sure she had his attention, the Vixen made a swift pivot and headed towards the one place in all the world she knew absolutely no one could eavesdrop.

Straight into the mahogany paneled room, the second she knew Stone had crossed the threshold, Annika closed the door with a thought, sat behind the massive Ashen ~wood governor’s desk and touched the panel only she and her grandfather had ever known about.

Faint whirring, the sound of a mechanized door sliding open, filled the room. Laying her hand on the tempered glass panel, she held her breath as the needle automatically pricked the tip of her longest finger. It wasn’t that it hurt, it was knowing what came next that always made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

Hearing Stone’s sharp inhale as the scent of her blood filled the room and the fact that he didn’t move, made the Vixen smile despite the circumstances. He was actually following her lead, trusting her to make the right moves. Maybe there really was hope for two pigheaded loners to find balance in a relationship destined by Fate.

Watching a thin stream of her own life’s essence fill the delicately incised rune, she waited until the telltale click echoed through the room and the scent of her grandfather’s Cherrywood pipe tobacco filled the air. Swiveling the chair so she could face her Mate, Annika smiled despite Stone’s furrowed brows and defined frown.

“The magic my afi that he literally bled into these walls is now activated. There is no one in this world, or any other, who can hear us, or for that matter, penetrate its defenses.”

She couldn’t blame him for cautiously walking forward, nor could she condemn his questioning look that was peppered with ire as Stone took a seat in the chair in front of the desk. Continuing with a sigh, she started, “I want to apologize to you. I…”

“You have no need to be sorry about anything,” Stone interrupted. “It’s me…”

Holding up her hand and waiting until he’d stopped midsentence, Annika reached for his fingers where they were nervously tapping the desk. Covering his hand with hers, she let everything she was feeling flow to her Mate as she went on, “No, you’re wrong. I have lots to apologize for.” Clearing her throat, more anxious than she’d expected to be, the Vixen forced herself to look her Dragon right in the eye as she continued, “You see, I wasn’t the one who brought you here ~who pulled you out of that horrible, broken down hut. It was my Godmother, Gerri Wilder.”

Grumbling something she thought sounded like ‘should’ve known’ followed by ‘blasted, meddling old bat’ under his breath, Stone’s finger relaxed as he wound them through hers and nodded for her to go on.
