Chapter Eleven

Kiwa

My heart swells with warmth. The vision of Daniel brings sweat to my forehead. I never had this feeling for anyone. No way, I’m not in love. I needed to escape. Even for one night. He did that and more. I forgot I’m unemployed, or that I miss Mitch. I bottled all of my problems and stored them away. Initially, I didn’t see Daniel sexually. I didn’t want to date. But his personality sparkles. He has some many layers to him. He peeled them back so I could see him. Without the labels or the money. His authentic self.

I grab the empty plate after devouring the omelet, which I can say was amazing. He made my eggs just right. Don’t know how he knew I like my eggs fried hard. Lucky guess, I suppose.

Taking in a deep breath, I get a scent of burnt food. I enter the kitchen to find Shonda cooking. She is whipping the eggs with such force she might crack the bowl. “Is everything okay?” I question.

She flinches and turns around. “You scared me,” she explains and places the bowl on the counter. “I saw Mr. Fine in the kitchen, cooking. Suddenly I got an appetite,” she responds, then makes her way to the table. I place the plate in the sink before taking a seat. The warmth of her glare burns me from ten feet away. Shonda will ask more questions than the IRS. I dread these conversations. I could never keep a secret from her. Once she pries the floodgates open, I just spill everything.

“So, what happened?”

“What?” I question, trying to be modest. I want to scream.

“Don’t play.”

I grimace and nod. “Nothing.”

“Do I have ‘fool’ written across my forehead? Come on, and leave nothing out.”

“Girl, we had the best sex ever. I thought he was probably good in bed because he was so cocky.” I gasp as last night replays. “It was better than I imagined,” I continue, sweating, reminiscing about the steamy sex.

“Damn, I need a millionaire.” Shonda laughs. “Mitchell is officially history.”

“Not exactly.” I wince

“What?”

“I’m infatuated with Daniel. Maybe I’m really in love with Mitch.”

“No, you left Mitch for a reason.”

Her words resonate with me. She is right; Mitch and I have no chemistry. I still have love for him, though I’m not in love with him. None of this makes sense. I’ve known Mitch for years, Daniel for only a week. But Daniel is so infatuating it’s dangerous. How could I fall in love with someone in one night?

“I can’t be in love with Daniel.”

She squints. “It’s the sex.” She giggles and grabs her cup.

I walk over to the fridge and grab the orange juice. “What should I do?”

Shonda sets her cup down, giving me a slight frown. “About what?”

“He wants me to meet him at Omen tonight.”

“Go enjoy the ride while it lasts.” She grabs the bowl of eggs, pouring them into the sizzling skillet.

“We are from two different worlds. He manages Omen, but he clearly comes from money. He doesn’t say how much money, but he’s not one of those snobby millionaires.
