I healed. Even if I didn’t want to without Allison. My family didn’t let me wallow. I could have wallowed for months, but no one would leave me alone. Damn family. They were the best thing in my life.

My mother hugged me outside the portal. "It's been nice having you here, even if it wasn't under the best of circumstances."

It had been good to be surrounded by family, but I was ready to be alone again. To lick my wounds for sure.

“She’ll come around. You may have to give her space,” Mom said.

I didn't want to talk about Allison.

Duncan came by to use the portal after me. "Take a few more days off."

My father chimed in. “Get your strength back first.”

If the rest of my brothers had been there, they might have said the same things. I didn't want to hear it. I was fine.

I finally left the island for my own apartment, hoping they would leave me alone. My heart was broken over Allison, so I threw myself into work.

“Hey, stranger,” Benita said.

She’d known I was in the hospital, but not for what. Since she didn’t know the whole dragon situation, I couldn’t explain what had happened. “Hey.”

She followed me into my office. “The fires you need to put out right now are at the top of our pile of messages. The rest can wait until tomorrow.”

“Our production line stopped three times while I was gone?”

“Yes. Some of the fabrics weren’t feeding properly.”

I flopped into my chair. “Bad fabric. I knew we should have sourced those better.”

I wondered briefly if it was corporate espionage. I wouldn't put it past the supernaturals to try to do that. It was no secret who the Cartwrights were, and it was no secret in the supernatural world that we were dragon shifters. Humans would never have access to the information to make that connection.

That was a can I didn't want to open, but I'd have to mention it to Duncan. "Has the problem been solved, or do I need to go down there?"

"The plant foreman wants to show you what he found."

I rubbed a hand down my face. “Okay. I’ll do that when we’re finished. What’s the next fire?”

"The IT Department isolated a virus before it got to the rest of the company. They want to expand their budget for better firewalls," Benita said. She pointed to a paper. "If you sign that, they can get emergency funds."

I did and handed her the paper. “Get that to purchasing asap.”

“Will do.”

“Next fire?”

I was already exhausted, and I hadn't worked a full day. I probably should have come back part-time for a week. My family had been right, but I was going to forge ahead because I didn't want to be alone with my thoughts. They would only go to Allison if I did that.

I wasn't fully giving up on her, but I didn't know what my next move was. I was a dragon, and we didn't give up that easily.

"Those are the big ones.
