In many ways, the University of Colorado was very similar to Utah State in many ways. There were hundreds of eager students milling across the campus, eager to start their lives or continue their degrees, carrying bookbags and boxes.

Darcy remembered her first day of college and how exciting it had been, but this time, she was filled with a sense of unhappiness. What had inspired her so greatly in May now filled her with an uneasiness she didn’t understand.

“It’s just nerves,” Fred had told her reassuringly when he helped her pack up the old Jeep Wrangler Darcy had bought with the money she had put aside for her trip to Europe. “And you’re probably still healing too.”

“I’m fine,” she told him, and even though her scars had healed, Darcy wasn’t sure that her internal pain would ever really diminish. It had been almost three full months since she had left Paris, and while she would be lying to say she didn’t think of Andreas, she fixated on him much less than she had.

The summer had been spent recuperating and slowly regaining her strength as the doctor ordered. But as strong as her body had become, her daily walks becoming the jogs she had once loved so much, the hole in her heart remained.

“He must have been something in bed,” Melody joked when Darcy told her the story about how Andreas had come and gone from her life.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Darcy barked at her cousin, defensiveness coursing through her.

“You’re still moping about it a month later. You knew the guy for a few days.”

It had been the reality check that Darcy had needed, and she forced herself to look forward at the impending school year.

Yet as she stood on campus, trying to orient herself, Darcy could not help but feel like she didn’t belong there. A knot in her gut kept her on the quad, almost rooted in place.

“You look lost. Need a hand?”

The sound of a man’s voice caused her head to swivel, and Darcy found herself looking at a pair of kind eyes.

“I-I’m looking for the business building,” she confessed, knowing full well that she could find it on her own. The older man nodded wisely and pointed directly in front of her.

“That’s it there,” he replied. “What year are you in?”

“I’m doing my MBA,” Darcy replied. As she spoke, she suddenly felt as though her body was floating away.

“Are you all right?” the man asked, peering at her, his graying eyebrows knitting. “You seem a little pale.”

“Must be first day jitters,” Darcy mumbled, although she didn’t believe it. “Thank you.”

“No problem. And remember, your masters is just like your bachelor’s degree, only more excruciating,” he chuckled. Darcy tried to smile, but the expression became a grimace as water filled her mouth.

What is wrong with me?

Inhaling deeply, she adjusted her backpack and made her way toward the business building, each step making her feel dizzier. By the time she reached the doors, she had to stop and catch her breath again.
