A BITTER DRINK

Several maps were spread across the table: Drachia, Azadiq, Ellos and Gnagnia. There were red and orange bone thimbles placed above cities and above wizard and witch fiefs across the land of Azadiq. One silver thimble sat alone over the western coast of Eshya. Banvix held Galathiel so he could look down.

"My team of scholars and strategists have been working at trying to understand what this Kali is doing in the various lands of our world." Queen Brenna gestured at all four maps. "Each of these is a known attack. The red ones are successful in killing a leader. The orange ones, as you can see over Drachia, are where damage was dealt, but no death."

That collection of thimbles didn't include Thord. Though he had died in a different world entirely.

"You will notice," she continued, "there are no markers on Gnagnia. Now either the giants are no threat to her, she has no interest in such a small land, or—"

"They are working with her," I said.

Both Brax and Brenna snapped their heads to look at me. "Excuse me?" Brax said. "Such dark suspicions coming from our bright, shiny mortal?"

"The maestrus trained me to think of all the possibilities," I said. "Even those that go against friendships. From my own interactions, I don't believe it is true. After all, Kali killed a giant in that other world. But that might have been a sacrifice to fool us."

"Well, my tacticians agree with you." Queen Brenna smoothed out a corner of the map of Drachia. "Of course, they haven't trusted the giants for thousands of years, so it’s not as much of a logical leap for them. Even when we thought the giants were all gone, we didn't trust them. And later, after they attacked us, we still didn’t trust them."

"And yet you allowed them to return to Drachia?" I said.

"The past is a bitter drink," Queen Brenna replied. "I prefer the honeysuckle taste of the imagined future. Our land will be greener and stronger because of their presence. And those are not the actions of an enemy."

"Every option is to be examined." I leaned on the table. "But it is unlikely."

"All of this," Galathiel said. "Eat. Deathwings."

"Ah.” Queen Brenna leaned on the table. "We'll get to that, my dear Prince. So the giants, assuming they are not on her side, may be her last target because they are the largest and least warlike. She will knock out her other enemies before turning on them."

"That's a sound strategy," Brax said. "And what do the giants say to this?"

“They say they do not fight in wars. They are peaceful." She sighed. "It is such a waste of power."

"Kali killed Grysh," I said. "You would think that would wake them up."

"They recognize Kali was trapped in a net,” Banvix said. "So they understand that she acted out of an animalistic anger and they forgive her."

"Forgive her?" I said. "How could they?"

"That's a curious reaction," Brax said. "You know their hearts are full of forgiveness.
