Chapter Twenty-Two

His wrath was uncontainable. The rage visceral.

His fury all-consuming.

Alasdair was going to raze Stonemore to the ground, brick by brick. He wouldn’t stop, wouldn’t rest until he had his hands around the Divine’s neck. Until he looked the bastard in the eye and watched the life drain from the mortal’s body.

No doubt the Divine thought to use Merrill to accomplish his end goals. That made it even more imperative that Alasdair locate Merrill without delay. But if Alasdair didn’t want to rampage through the palace, alerting everyone to his presence and tossing the match on the powder keg that would start the war, he needed to rein in his anger. Which was much easier said than done.

He inhaled deeply and then slowly released his breath. But his ire was too intense to be set aside so easily. It sickened him to see the research that had been unknowingly gathered on the dragons—and the twins. What concerned him was how the humans had learned so much about his kind. He had no idea when the mortals began their information gathering, but they were still compiling it since the newest dragon depicted was none other than Constantine.

Alasdair looked at the book in his hand. He didn’t remember picking it back up. The hefty weight of it was a reminder of how much the humans knew. He fought against the overwhelming, undeniable need to douse the entire room in dragon fire. One thing was for certain: He would destroy everything they had on the dragons. Every last page, each word, every drawing and map.

“What do you want to do?” Lotti asked in a soft voice.

He closed his eyes for a heartbeat and shook his head. “Destroy it.”

“Then do it.”

Alasdair turned his head to her. He’d been in knots when he couldn’t locate her, but that was his fault. He’d had to put some distance between them after the heat he’d felt shielding her against the wall—and how she’d looked at him. As if she desired him. The inferno of his anger had swiftly turned to hunger. He had come close to kissing her.

His gaze dropped to her mouth. He still wanted to kiss her. To feel her supple lips against his. But he wouldn’t stop with one kiss. He hungered for more. For all of her.

But now wasn’t the time for any of that. Alasdair inwardly shook himself and considered her words as he tossed the book onto the table. “If I do, they’ll know we’re here.”

“By the things they learned about dragons, they know more than you think,” she told him.

Alasdair grunted as he looked away. The last time he had felt such indignation was during the battle with the humans on Earth. He had never thought to feel such emotion again. And yet, here he was. Seething.

“You want to hurt them.”

“Aye.” There was no use lying.

Lotti walked around the table. “Then you’re going to want to see this.”

He swung his gaze to see her standing before a map. Alasdair strode to it and realized he looked at a drawing of every tunnel in the mountain.
