DROWNING
Drowning happens when respiratory passages are blocked by liquid and you breathe in the liquid instead of air. It’s most common in small children; babies can drown in as little as an inch of water. Contrary to Hollywood depictions of drowning as a dramatic struggle against the elements, drowning is typically—eerily—silent. It’s also difficult to recognize drowning from a distance. What’s known as the instinctive drowning response is an automatic set of behaviors triggered in the body by the sensation of suffocation in water, when a person is, or is very close to, drowning. These behaviors include lateral flapping, pressing one’s arms in the water in an attempt to rise high enough to breathe, trying to roll over to one’s back in an attempt to float, and tilting one’s head back. It almost never entails screaming for help or waving one’s arms.
Performing CPR
• For an adult or child, put the heel of your hand in the center of the chest at the nipple line. For an infant, use two fingers on the breastbone.
• Press down two inches for an adult or child, making sure not to press down on the ribs; press down an inch and a half on an infant, making sure not to press down at the end of the breast bone.
• You’re going to do thirty chest compressions at the rate of one hundred compressions a minute (roughly equal to the beat of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” or Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”). Check to see if the person is breathing.
• If the patient is not breathing, you should pinch the nose to create a tight seal, breathe two puffs of air into the mouth, and repeat the chest compressions. Repeat until the person starts breathing or help arrives.
