Chapter 14

“This is quite the turnout, don’t you think?”

Rafe’s voice was amused while he observed the crowd with interest, attending the church fair with two roles: that of a local out to enjoy the goods on sale, but also as a fireman on duty in case of an emergency. A few of the sheriff’s men were scattered about, the sheriff not in sight but who Gareth knew was present, too. While Gareth was more local than doctor this time, he’s always on duty.

“If you mean the whole town showed up, then yes.”

Rafe grinned. “It just means the town loves our church, showing off their baked goods…oh, and gossip. It’s a ripe spot.”

“Hmm.”

He spotted a few clan members with their families, others alone, all of them pretending they were just acquaintances who didn’t have regular meetings under an abandoned barn. Jasper was with his family, too, the doting husband buying everything for his wife, while Bruce was with the teenage twins, trailing after them as they cajoled him into buying them some treats. After some minutes of watching the crowd, Rafe’s face lit up, then turned downright intimate.

“Excuse me, I see some banana bread.”

The man strode off. Gareth kept looking until Rafe swooped in to drop a kiss on a blonde woman’s cheek, then turn her so he could kiss her in front of the crowd gathered at the table. It was partly his flair for drama but mostly a pride to show off his woman to the world, and Gareth could understand why. The man had found his mate and was not letting go, and the clear connection between the two was nice to see.

He wasn’t here for it, though, so he kept strolling through the mazes of tables and canopies, all arranged at the church’s large front yard. There was a balanced mix of desserts and non-desserts and a familiar pie had him wandering over to a table.

“Mrs. Lieberman, I didn’t think you would be selling your pies, you usually give them away.”

The old woman beamed, but it was Mr. Lieberman who answered from a folding chair behind her.

“Trust me, she’ll give what she can’t sell later so there won’t be any left for me.”

Gareth tried not to laugh while Mrs. Lieberman waved a hand. “All for a good cause, doc. Don’t buy one. I’ll give you a piece.”

“No, no.” He took out a few bills, then firmly placed them in her palm. “For a good cause, right?”

He took a box of apple pie, kept going. A few regular patients waved at him, so he was polite and entertained small talk, then bought their goods and paid more than the amount they asked for. He stopped in his tracks when he spotted Summer chatting with Marge and Hattie, the three wearing identical shirts that supported Hattie’s display. Marge’s jaw dropped when she glimpsed him approaching.

“Did you buy the whole fair or something?”

Amused, he deposited the stack of items on the table beside the banana bread, then bought two loaves, too.
