Chapter 11

Julie knocked on Marc’s office door and peeked into his office. “Dr. Collins, your four o’clock appointment just called. She said she’s parking and will be up in a minute. Do you want me to send her right in?”

Marc looked up from his Hip Hop Weekly magazine. His feet were kicked up on his desk. “Intercom still broken, Julie?”

“Yes. I’ll call them again.” Julie had already called maintenance about the intercom earlier that morning when they’d realized the system wasn’t working.

“Thank you. Send her on in when she gets up here, please,” Marc said as he continued to flip through the pages. A couple seconds later, realizing Julie was still in the doorway, Marc looked up. “Is there something else?”

“Oh, no, no. That’s it,” Julie said. She slowly exited the office, surprised that Marc hadn’t tried to hit on her or said one inappropriate thing to her. She smiled, glad Phil’s little talk with Marc had actually worked.

Once Marc’s patient showed up, Julie showed her right into his office and went back to her desk to start finishing up for the day. Phil came out to the lobby at quarter after five. Even though Julie was off the clock at five, she was never in any rush to leave, unlike Marc. He was often the last one to get there and the first to leave.

“Is Marc still in his session?” Phil asked. Typically Marc would swing by Phil’s office to say good-bye—at 4:59 p.m.

“Yep,” Julie said.

Phil looked over at Marc’s door. “Who’s he in with?”

“Janell Andrews. She’s a new patient. Pretty young girl. This is only her second session, I believe.”

A suspicious look covered Phil’s face as he continued to stare at the door. He thought out loud. “I wonder if she’s that good-looking college student he was telling me about.” Phil surely couldn’t fathom Marc staying late for any other reason. He was allergic to going above and beyond.

Julie thought for a second. “Yep, that would probably be her.” She finished gathering up her things. She wasn’t the least bit concerned. Hell, anything to keep Marc from bothering her.

Phil made his way over to Marc’s door. He knocked, but there was no answer. There wasn’t any talking either. He heard some rustling around. “Dr. Collins,” Phil called out. Once again, he got no response, but he could clearly hear someone inside the office. He checked the doorknob, but it was locked. He knocked again, slightly harder this time. “Dr. Collins, I need to see you out here, please.”

Finally Marc came out of the office, quickly closing the door behind him. He was breathing hard, sweating slightly, and he was straightening his clothes and tucking his shirt inside his pants.

Phil tried to look over Marc’s shoulder and into the office before the door had closed behind him, to no avail. “Is that your four o’clock appointment still in there?”

“Uh, yes, sir,” Marc said, trying to sound professional. “We were wrestling with some serious issues in there today.” He cleared his throat.
