Bren’s eyes opened so slowly that he swore he could hear them sliding back. The sky above was a vibrant blue with not a single cloud in sight. The shimmering sun above him would have roasted him if he were not lying in a pool of cold water.

Bren sat up and splashed some of the water on his face to bring himself back to life. He noticed he was only wearing a pair of breeches. Apparently, his shirt had been torn from his body, for he found a jagged strip of it still tucked into his breeches.

Bren rubbed his eyes and then ran his hands through his short hair. Nearby was a waterfall that came from an adjacent cliff. He was at the base of a snow-capped mountain and there were many trees surrounding the edge of the pool he was in.

He remembered what happened. He remembered everything. He had spent a day-and-a-half battling the animal spirit inside him. He had wandered deep into the mountains outside of the Lycan village. He had barely rested at all for that length of time. He had fought the urge to kill, and aside from a few deer that he feasted on, he had gotten what he wanted.

Bren had conquered the spirit of Lycania within. It had been a long, grueling test of his willpower, but he had won. He could converse with his beast-side and give it commands to obey. He could stay in control of his lycan form.

He remembered coming to kneel by the pool, but that was the last of it. He must have collapsed from exhaustion right into the water. Bren smiled wryly at the thought of how he could have drowned just after his victory.

Finally, Bren forced himself to stand. His entire body ached, and he rubbed his muscles to give them some relief. With a contented sigh, Bren looked at his surroundings and smiled. Now he could go and join his friends at Bandimere.

Looking at the sun, he oriented himself and headed towards the lycan village.

Bren marched over rough, untrodden terrain for hours. He remembered coming this far, but in his werewolf form it had not taken him very long to travel in leaps and bounds through the mountains. But the slower pace did not bother him.

Bren’s hunger grew as he walked. He noticed the emptiness of his stomach, and he stumbled into a clearing where a deer was drinking from a pond. It looked at him with its ears pricked and then skittered away into the tree line.

“Okay, let’s try this,” Bren said, planting his feet. In his mind, he spoke, “Spirit of Lycania, listen to me and obey my commands. Come forth!”

Instantly, he could feel the mind of his were-beast moving from his subconscious to the fore-front of his mind to meld with his own. This brought on the transformation immediately. With his werewolf abilities he chased after the deer. Compared to his supple beast-form, the deer had no chance.

After feasting, Bren said, “Leave me.
