CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Feeling relaxed and decadent, Nova lounged in the saltwater hot tub while Zhi fixed them a platter of food to share.

It went against the grain to allow Zhi to serve her. But though this was his space, he was concerned she’d pick up an echo from one of the men who’d installed the cabin or one of the manufacturers.

Truthfully, she didn’t fight him too hard. Nestled in between the two branches of the L in the cabin, the tub rested on a redwood deck overlooking a valley full of pine trees and a small lake somewhere near Snoqualmie Pass. It was a breathtaking view, the pristine snow-dusted mountain caps and sea of evergreens almost painfully perfect.

As a bonus, the temperature on the deck was spelled to be a comfortable and balmy seventy-eight degrees. She could streak across the deck in perfect warmth. Not that she would do that. Nova had used up her bravery when she’d stripped down to her lingerie. Now it was wet, and she didn’t have a change of clothes.

No going backward. Even if she had to run around the cabin naked, she’d do it.

“As much as I would love that, there’s no rush.”

She turned in the water to find Zhi at the sliding door. His grin was infectious. “That, and if you got naked right now I’d need another cold shower.

He approached holding a towel as big as a blanket. Setting the tray down, he leaned against the hot tub wall, dipping his fingers in the water. “I’m glad you like that tub, but I’ve learned from experience that soggy canapes are not that appetizing. Why don’t we eat this inside?”

In a near-blissed-out state, she was more than agreeable. “Sure.”

Taking his hand, she let him wrap her in the towel where they ate in front of the fireplace before he found her a flannel shirt to sleep in.

Despite spending most of the evening in his lap, Nova couldn’t help but look at the bed with trepidation. Zhi, who’d been digging through his drawers for sleepwear for himself, turned back and swore.

“Damn it, I forgot about the sheets,” he said, misinterpreting the reason for her expression.

Oh, yeah. She’d forgotten too. Normally she carried a set of silk sheets with her, but their original outing had been a short business meeting. Now the only thing between her and the vast expanse of Egyptian cotton was Zhi’s flannel shirt.

“I’ve been reacting well to the cabin and its contents,” she reasoned aloud. She hadn’t been brave enough to walk around barefoot yet, but it might be possible here. Although maybe she wouldn’t. The sight of her walking around in her heels seemed to please him.

He made a rough sound in his throat. “I do like it, but I also want you to be comfortable and safe.”

She twisted to look at him, reminding herself this was his place. “I will be.”

Turning back, she bent at the waist to place her bare hands on the bedding at the same time Zhi reached out and said “Wait.
