IN THE MEANTIME

In Genesis, Joseph went through some tests. Probably way more tests than he wanted. He was betrayed. Human trafficked. Falsely accused. Thrown in prison for something he didn’t do. And finally, he was forgotten. We’ll unpack much more of Joseph’s story in a later chapter, but right now let’s just focus on the testing aspect of his life. Psalm 105:18–19 (NKJV) explains, “They hurt his feet with fetters, He was laid in irons. Until the time that his word came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.”

Joseph had a prophetic dream when he was seventeen years old, but that dream wouldn’t come to pass for another thirteen or so years. Although Joseph would eventually be elevated to second in command of Egypt, as a teenager he was not nearly ready for this world-changing post. He needed to learn and mature in both wisdom and character, and the way he achieved this was through the many tests he passed. As Psalm 105 states, “The word of the LORD tested him” until Joseph was fully prepared for the time when his calling and future could come to pass.

Only because Joseph embraced the tests with excellence, as opposed to the “Cs get degrees” mentality, was God able to elevate him to become second in command of the most powerful nation of the world. Through him, thousands of people’s lives were saved, and he never would have been able to arrive at his destiny if he hadn’t learned from the tests along the way. Are you catching this? You can go through the test if you know that it’s producing something to help you get to where God wants to take you. Just because you don’t see the benefit doesn’t mean the benefit will not eventually be seen. A popular saying is, “Seeing is believing,” but for Christians, “Believing is seeing” is just as true.
