Don’t Quit!

Jamie and I have been in ministry for over forty-five years. We’ve been through a lot of hard times. Once, I was talking with a group of preachers about some of the tough times we’d gone through. I told them about the financial problems Jamie and I had faced, such as when we hadn’t eaten in two weeks during the time that Jamie was eight months pregnant. They said to me, “My God, what you did to Jamie is worse than anything we ever did to our wives.” Yet these men had committed adultery, lied, stolen, and gone to jail. They had done all these terrible things, and they still thought what Jamie went through was a lot worse!

I’ve been through a lot of hardship in my life. I think Jamie is the only woman on the planet who would have stuck with me through what we have gone through. Radio broadcaster Paul Harvey even noted on his broadcast once that one particular hardship of ours was one of the worst things he had ever heard in his life.

The Lord spoke to me in a dream on July 26, 1999. He told me I was just now starting my ministry. This was after I had been in ministry for thirty-one years! If something would have happened and I would have died, I would have missed what God called me to do. This was both encouraging and discouraging at the same time. It was discouraging because I spent thirty-one years in the ministry being schooled for the ministry God had called me to. On the other hand, it was encouraging because we had seen some great things happen over those thirty-one years. So if I was just starting my ministry, that meant it was only going to get better!

When we started on television on January 3, 2000, we hit a place where things were working nearly effortlessly. Before that time, it was a struggle. We were on the verge of disaster. It looked like our ministry could die at any moment. Then, all of a sudden, things just began to work. There was an anointing that wasn’t present before. People began responding to our message and our ministry.

Over the next two years, our ministry doubled. Finally there was light at the end of the tunnel, and it wasn’t a train! We were going to make it. We were going to survive. We actually started seeing people’s lives change. The lesson is, though we’d had problems all the years prior to that, we didn’t get lazy and quit. We would have limited what God wanted to do in our lives if we had.

We don’t need to rust out; we need to wear out. We need to burn out serving God. We can rest throughout all of eternity. People are resistant to change because they’ve made their “nests.” They limit God because they have it nice. They are lazy. They are comfortable. That’s not a good place to be. I’ve just given up on ever getting to a place where I coast.
