All the time? Shielded by the illusions? What had he seen? What the hell had Compassion seen? Fitz forced himself to react. As Holsred’s eyes fixed on the spasming of his fellow creature, three forward and two arching over his flat starfish head, Fitz did what he did best. Get away on his toes. Ostrev was a veteran of almost twenty missions. The normal survival curve ended with one out of a thousand passing the fifteen-mission point. It could have been chance, but he liked to think it was skill. So he entered the room cautiously and peered through the clouds of burnt Time Lord flesh, with his weapons primed and ready. Secretly he would be quite glad if the Doctor had given that dusty archivehound Allopta a bloody nose. One of his earliest post-Loom memories had been of a gang of hard-bitten inductees sharing a banned copy of Doctor ? - all proper names had been auto-edited out of bases’ message system for reasons of war security, and even the downloaded underground flimsies hadn’t been free of the software - In an Exciting Adventure With the Enemy.
