‘Well, we’re here to work,’ said Zizi. ‘And this paper won’t steal itself.’

‘Do you have to?’ asked the Doctor. ‘Couldn’t you just … not? And say you did?’

‘Or we could not not and say we did,’ said Ajay. ‘The boss is paying us big money for this job.’

‘The boss? Is this like Beyoncé, where she only goes by one name because she’s so brilliant?’ asked the Doctor.

‘Sounds familiar.’ I couldn’t help smiling even though we were in a messy situation.

‘The boss is never-you-mind-who,’ said Sue. ‘I don’t know what you think you’re going to achieve by swanning in here.’ She looked the Doctor up and down. ‘How arrogant must you be, to think you can stop us?’

‘Pretty arrogant, on a good day,’ agreed the Doctor. She gave a shrug. ‘Still, I thought I’d come and ask you to stop stealing the paper. The Producers work very hard to make this. You’re taking something very precious from people who really care about their work.’

‘We care about our work, too,’ said Sue, with a quirk of a smile. ‘We’re professionals.’

If she hadn’t been an intergalactic paper thief, I think I might have liked her.

‘Come on, let’s just zap them and get on with it,’ said Zizi.

I did not like the sound of that. What was the Doctor up to?

‘Was that the plan?’ I hissed at her. ‘Just … ask them to stop?’

‘It’s always worth a shot,’ said the Doctor. ‘Plus, keep people talking and sometimes, just sometimes, it gives you exactly long enough to reprogram their robots with your sonic screwdriver …’

‘WHAT?’ cried Sue.

The robots were loosening their tentacles. I could move my arms again.

Oh, you beautiful alien genius, I thought. She’d reprogrammed the robots!

We were free! I leaped back, and the Doctor waved her sonic in triumph. THAT’S WHAT THE BUZZING I’D HEARD WAS!
