A familiar sight in the Morris home for more than 50 years: a leather doctor’s bag by the front door.
Dr. Waller The physician in Spring Creek when I first came to Medina, was Dr. Elmer E. Waller. When he became unable to practice medicine, I treated him, and many of his former patients began calling me. Also, Waller was the brother-in-law of the school principal at Three Way, Mr. Fesmire, who was greatly admired in the community as a good administrator and disciplinarian. Since I was treating Dr. Waller, Mr. Fesmire began coming to see me with his wife, and they thought the world of me, which caused my practice to grow in the Three Way community, When Mrs. Fesmire became critically ill, I sent her to Leland Johnson in Jackson; he increased her medication, and we continued treating her till she died.
Ambulance service Ambulance service, when needed, was provided by Menton Replogle, who owned the Medina Funeral Home. Menton and I were friends and, for a while, neighbors, but once I had to straighten out a knot in our relationship.
Early one morning I phoned Dr. Batten at Memorial Hospital in Jackson about a surgery case I was sending in. However, later in the day Batten phoned me back asking, “Bob, where is your patient?” I said, “I don’t know. I told the ambulance where to take her—unless she backed out and wouldn’t go. So I’ll investigate and call you back.”
I phoned the patient’s home and asked where she was. “We had her taken to Dr. Webb’s hospital.” “Who told you to carry her there?” “Well, Menton told us, if it was him, he would take her to Dr. Webb.” “Well, I thank you,” I said. “I’ll see him about it.” So I phoned Dr. Batten, “Don’t be looking for the patient. This undertaker has carried her to Dr. Webb’s hospital, because they’re big buddies. I’ll deal with him, and I’m sorry it happened.”
