Bridget hurried away before Meg or Bella could insist on joining her. Despite reassuring them that there was probably nothing wrong, she hadn’t convinced herself of that. Tina had deliberately lied to her, and probably lied to Baxter too. And now she had vanished for a second time. Bridget had to find her, and quickly.

It was only when she left the dining hall that she realised she didn’t know which room Tina was staying in.

Fortunately the porter appeared not to have heard of data protection and privacy rules. Or if he had, he’d decided they didn’t apply to him. ‘Tina Mackenzie? She’s in Mob Quad,’ he told Bridget cheerfully, giving her the staircase and room number.

‘Thanks,’ said Bridget.

She turned around to find Jake standing behind her. ‘Evening, ma’am.’

‘Hello, Jake. Have you got some news for me?’ She set off across the quadrangle, talking as she walked.

‘Not as such,’ he said, falling into step beside her. With his long gait, he matched her pace with ease. ‘But I thought you’d like to know that we’ve just about wrapped up here, and I think DI Baxter intends to release everyone in the next half hour or so.’

‘Well, they’ll be glad to hear that.’ She continued to walk briskly across the quad, passing the entrance to the dining hall and continuing on to Patey’s Quad.

‘Going somewhere, ma’am?’ inquired Jake.

‘I am, actually. Perhaps you should come with me.’

‘Ma’am?’

‘It’s probably nothing,’ she said as they turned right into Mob Quad, ‘but I’m a bit worried about a friend of mine. Tina Mackenzie.’

‘The disgraced lawyer?’

‘Yes,’ said Bridget. She supposed that was how Tina would be thought of from now on. The rising star who had fallen from the heights and crashed to the ground in a heap of shame. ‘She didn’t show up at dinner, and I want to check that she’s all right.’

‘You think something might have happened to her?’

Bridget wondered what to tell her sergeant. She was only following a hunch, but Jake was a man with good down-to-earth common sense. She decided to tell him everything. ‘I’m worried she might have tried to make a getaway. I just discovered that she knew in advance that Alexia was writing the newspaper article about her. In fact, the two of them were seen arguing about it just after they arrived in college yesterday.’

‘You think she might be the murderer?’ said Jake, picking up on her meaning.

‘Let’s just say that I want to reassure myself that she’s in her room.’

‘Of course,’ said Jake. ‘We should definitely look in on her.’

Another thought occurred to Bridget as they walked. Had the removal of Alexia’s eyes been a message that her career built on exposing hidden secrets was now at an end?

With most of the guests at dinner, Mob Quad was quiet. A light shone out of the upstairs library window and Bridget wondered if Dr Thomas was up there, surrounded by her beloved books. Perhaps Bridget would drop in on her later, once she’d confirmed that Tina hadn’t done anything stupid.
