The Best Thing Ever
What do you suppose Mohamed would say if you asked him to tell you the best thing that ever happened to him? Would he say it was seeing his sister healed from deadly cancer? No, although that is certainly something he will always remember with joy. Would he say that the best thing that ever happened to him was becoming someone who sees the power of God unleashed when he prays for others? No, although that, too, is an amazing, wonderful thing.
The best thing that has ever happened to Mohamed is the best thing that can happen to anyone. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to my wife, Angie. And to our six sons. Nobody I’ve ever met has ever had anything better happen to them than this: coming to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and obtaining eternal salvation through faith in Him.
This is the apex of everything we are talking about in this book. All signs and wonders are pointing toward God’s offer of eternal, abundant life through Christ.
I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but every once in a while, I’ll suddenly remember how gloriously saved I am. I always know it, of course. But sometimes, it comes to me like a news flash of late-breaking news. I’m reminded suddenly of what Jesus did for me on the cross, and I think, I’m powerfully saved! I’m living forever in heaven with Jesus! As I think about that, a chill rolls down my spine, and I feel elated and happy.
I think most of us are often guilty of taking our salvation for granted. We’ve become complacent about it, even though there is nothing on earth that could be better. I don’t care if you win a billion dollars in the lottery, if you’re named to People magazine’s list of the sexiest people alive, or if you’re a first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears. There is nothing on earth that can remotely compare to the gift of eternal life!
Some people also make the mistake of believing that eternal life is something that starts later on, after we die, or after Jesus comes again. But I believe eternal life begins at the moment we accept Jesus as Savior. It starts right here on earth, in the life we’re living right now. As Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Anyone who has the full life that Jesus offers should be a beacon of light pointing the way to Jesus through every means possible, including healings and other signs and wonders, as well as sharing the Gospel through words and deeds. As St. Francis of Assisi reportedly said, “Preach Jesus, and if necessary use words.”
