Chapter 10

KATY HAD A BIG decision to make, and she had to make it fast. She’d made a hard declaration against a banking institute, her own father’s to be exact, and Frank Davis wanted to know how she knew about such things as unscrupulous loan practices.

“It’s something I’ve learned at my—” Katy cut herself short.

“Katy has a business degree. I’m sure she learned that in one of her classes,” Tyler finished.

She smiled at the two men. At least she hadn’t out and out lied. She did have a degree. She would eventually have to tell the truth, but for now, she felt better just letting that ride.

“Come on. Dinner is ready.”

They followed her to the kitchen. She had prepared the table with the proper place settings, table cloth, and cloth napkins she’d found in a drawer in the pantry. Three votive candles flickered a welcoming light and surrounded three perfect pink roses in a glass from Uncle Frank’s garden.

“Fancy, smancy.” Frank hobbled over and sat down.

Tyler waited for Katy while she carried a big bowl of salad and an even bigger bowl of spaghetti and meat sauce to the table. She’d already poured ice cold sweet tea for each of them and had a plate of grilled garlic toast waiting.

“This is really good,” Frank said then took another big bite of spaghetti and sucked in one strand like a kid. “Pretty and can cook, too.” He looked at his nephew and winked.

Tyler pretended not to notice, but Katy had.

“Thank you. I have to make a confession.” Not a phrase she’d made lately. “This is the only thing I can cook. I hope that isn’t part of my job description, because I think everyone would get mighty tired of spaghetti every day.”

Tyler’s bright smile warmed her entire body, and she was sure it changed the color of her complexion to a deep red.

“It’s definitely good enough to have once a week and maybe leftovers for lunch the next day.”

“I can certainly do that.” Actually, she would enjoy that very much.

“When you called us to dinner, I was just about to tell Uncle Frank about the police report.”

Katy felt like an intruder. “Should I be part of that conversation?”

“You seem to be fitting in nice around here, and you’re working awful hard to get our butts out of a bind.” Frank started to use a cloth napkin, but laid it back down and swiped his long sleeve across his mouth. “From what I can see and from what Tyler has told me, you have a good grasp on finances. So, I’m sure you’ll keep anything you hear between the three of us. I had just finished telling Ty about my son Sidney’s stint in prison for drug running.”

Good Lord, what a piece of work Frank’s son was. No wonder Tyler called him Sid the Snake. Katy decided right there she may have to help Tyler strangle Sid.

Tyler looked at this uncle. “Did you know Sid bought a brand new truck before he left? He paid cash out of the loan money.
