20.1 Overview

When a company announces a business divestiture or separation, the information technology (IT) applications that support its processes must be separated as well. The process of separating IT applications during a divestiture or separation is referred to as application separation. This chapter details the action necessary to successfully plan for and execute application separation.

A divestiture or separation relies heavily on application separation strategy and planning before initiating execution and hence requires a clearly defined application separation life cycle (ASLC) . There are four overarching phases to the application separation life cycle:
