Coding in California

Ellison dropped out of college, then tried again at the University of Chicago before dropping out again. At that point, he left Chicago and moved to California. In California, he found a job as a computer programmer, despite never having taken a computer-science class. It was the late 1960s, and programmers did not need a college degree to get into the field—they simply needed to be good at coding. One of Ellison’s jobs was programming for Ampex Corporation, where he helped design a database for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The database, which he named Oracle, was a success, and in 1977, Ellison left Ampex with two coworkers to start their own database management company.
