usually don't care when someone's pissed at me, but I hate it when Hazel's upset with me. With the exception of my father and brother, whose tempers make me look like Mother Teresa, she's the only person I know who can weather my storms. I even scare Wil sometimes (or so he claims), but I'm trying not to think about him right now. But Hazel usually enjoys the show, so if I pissed her off, I have to wonder if I've gone too far.

But to be honest, I have no idea why Hazel's angry at all, let alone at me. What's there to be mad about? It'd better not be because I disrupted her flow with that white boy. When she got her flirt on in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong fuckin’ person, I got us out of there without anyone getting hurt.

And it's not the first time either. Although it's never gone this far, if I had a dollar for every time I had to give a lesson on how to respect a woman's boundaries to one of Hazel's overzealous suitors, we'd be driving to Frisco in my Dodge Magnum with chrome rims instead of this giant Spam can on wheels.

When we arrive at the motel, Hazel holds me back and tells Rena and Lou to go ahead. She's still upset, but the edge is off.

“The last time some guy called us dykes, you had a lot to say,” Hazel says. She tries hard to suppress it, but I hear the edge creep back into her voice.

She's angry because I didn't rip Brian a second asshole for calling us dykes?

If there's one thing I hate worse than Hazel being angry with me, it's my getting angry at her. But I can't help myself. She has me more confused than a U.S. marine searching for WMDs in Iraq. “Wait a minute. Hold up. Hit pause. First, you're pissed because I say something to that moron. Now you're mad because I didn't say something. What gives, Hazel?”

“I just want to know what's so different this time. And don't tell me they were in a group or it was nighttime or any BS like that. That was true from jump, and it didn't stop you from showing up Brian every chance you had.”

“You know what I want to know? I want to know why for someone who's so out, who said that this trip was about the sistas, who insisted that we stop here so we homegirls could have fun together, you gravitated to the boys so quickly?”

“Please. Where do you come off going there with me? You're the one who should've just strapped Wil to the roof the car and brought him along with us.”

“Oh, you want to make this about me?”

“It is about you, Jackie!” Okay, I didn't start this scene, but now that it's under way, I'm going to finish it. I live by the credo Don't start none won't be none, and ordinarily
