Cut Piece expresses an anguished interiority while offering a social commentary on the quiet violence that binds individual and society, the self and gender, alienation and connectedness (Munroe 2000:28).

Today Cut Piece is seen as one of Ono’s more successful “events” where she saw her art as not static objects passively presented to an audience, but instead as “an immediate social event . . . and an aesthetic commentary on the complicit relationship between individuals and the social body as a whole” (Munroe 2000:158).
