MYTH 39

Fire is worse than smoke

Fire causes more damage than smoke; flash fires and BLEVEs (see Myth 2) kill people before the smoke has had time to affect them. However, when fires occur in buildings, aircraft, and trains, more people are killed by carbon monoxide and other toxic chemicals in the smoke than by the fire itself. Several companies are now producing smoke hoods, which are designed to let people leave smoke-filled buildings and aircraft in safety. However, some of those on offer do not provide protection against carbon monoxide. At the time of this writing, Germany is the only country, so far as I am aware, with a standard and an approval system for the hoods.
