WHO WAS KING PHILIP?

Metacom (c. 1638–1676), also called Metacomet, was a Native American leader of the Wampanoag nation. He was the second son of Massasoit, a grand chief of the Wampanoag who oversaw peaceful relations with colonists. After his father died and his brother Wamsutta became chief, Metacom and his brother requested English names from the colonial court of the Plymouth settlement. Metacom received the name Philip, and Wamsutta was called Alexander. Philip became chief when Alexander died.
