There was a nation wide incident, in the United States that happened on January 15, 2009. It caught the attention of everyone in the United States and around the world. It was a dramatic story of staying on course. Captain Sully Sullenberger landed his plane and no one got hurt. January 15, 2009. All of the 155 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft survived. Now you might say, big deal, aren’t all pilots supposed to land their planes so no one gets hurt? When you go back and read the account of what was happening in that moment of decision you understand the extraordinary results of staying the course. Let me sum up this event this way. Just after take off on this fateful day, as his plane was ascending to cruising altitude or New York City, a flock a geese flew right into Captain Sully’s engines. A massive emergency failure happened in an instant. He had the co-pilot telling him to do one thing. Air traffic control telling him to land the plane in Teterboro airport. And he just responded calmly—“We’ll be in the Hudson.” Captain Sully landed his plane and no one got hurt.

Sully said, “We’ll be in the Hudson.”

He pulled it off. He landed the plane in the Hudson River. And you know, in a lot of ways, that’s what we have been talking about in this book: Beyond GPS, Knowing and Doing the Will of God. You see, how can you and I know how to handle crisis and decision time in our lives? I mean, are we just going to guess, or are we going to be able to calmly say—this is the best course of action I could take right now, today and this week? I have thought, and prayed and read scriptures and I am convinced this is God’s will for my life.

“If you need wisdom, if you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking.” -James 1:5 (CEV)

We have been talking about God’s will and how you can know God’s will for your life. In this verse it says—if you want to know what God wants you to do ask Him. Well, what God wants you to do is what is commonly referred to as His will. Once you figure out His will you then must stay on course and follow where God leads.

And let me give you again that working definition for God’s will. Here it is: God’s will is the direction I would choose for my life if I could see things from God’s perspective. Did you get it? It’s the direction I would choose for my life if I could see things from God’s perspective. And with God’s will, the verse says all we have to do is ask Him and He will tell us. That sounds easy enough for us, right?

Today we are going to talk about how do you stay on course. Because you see, it’s one thing to hear from God.
