CHAPTER 11

***MATT***

Matt followed Jessica up the trail to her cabin, his mind spinning with questions, wondering if there was such a thing as a coincidence and what Dominic would have to say about these new developments. He’d grilled her on the way to the cabin, trying to get every bit of information out of her, but she knew very little about the new cooperative and even less about who ran it. The problem was the pieces didn’t quite fit together, and he knew she couldn’t help him anymore. It was going to be up to Dominic and Adam to finish the puzzle.

When they got to her door, she hesitated, then turned to face him. “Do you want to come in for a little bit?” she asked. “I could make some coffee or something.”

It was the something that popped into his mind that had his heart pounding in his chest, and he had to swallow a few times before he could reply. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” he finally said. “I might be tempted to kiss you again.”

“Oh,” Jessica breathed, then seemed to recover. “I understand, don’t worry about it...I mean that wouldn’t be a good idea...I’m leaving...and you...well, you know what I mean...”

Before he could stop himself, he pulled her into his arms, lowered his mouth to hers, and pressed his lips to hers until she opened her mouth to him with a sigh. As his tongue explored her mouth, her arms came up around his neck, and she pressed her body up against his. The passion, finally given fuel, roared to life, and he suddenly couldn’t get enough of Jessica.

His hands roaming over her body, he memorized every curve and valley, her gasps of pleasure at his touch only making his body demand more. When they finally parted, chests heaving, Jessica’s eyes filled with desire, he had to force himself to step away from her, the urge to carry her inside to bed so strong he couldn’t trust himself. It took long agonizing seconds to get control, and he had to move back another step, making doubt appear in her eyes.

“It’s not that I don’t want to be close to you,” he finally managed to say, his words strained with the effort to resist her. “But if I get any closer, I won’t be held responsible for what might follow, so I’m going to say goodnight from here.”

“It’s okay, Matt,” she said. “I’m a big girl; I know this would be...well, you know...”

He studied her for a minute, then shook his head even though she’d given him the opening any man would have loved. “But it’s not okay with me,” he said. “There are things you don’t understand, things I’m not sure I even understand. I’m afraid that if I have one night with you, it won’t be enough, and that scares me, Jessica. I don’t want either of us to get hurt.”

Jessica smiled at him, and closed the distance between them, then reached up and stroked his cheek.
