Chapter 35

Chaos was down to one last option and it was a total shit one…

As he swung up and clutched the jagged rock, the pain from this test didn’t even register. He was too hellbent on reaching the top to care about anything other than getting there. He made quick work of scaling the cliff – thanks in part to the strength the drug, drooc, gave him. It didn’t prevent his hands from slicing wide open on the stone though. And the blood from his cuts made his grip slippery.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, he dangled one-handedly for a second, and then found another purchase. It was barely enough to use, but Chaos managed to pull himself up another foot.

Damn this climb. Damn the Seer for living at the top of this particular cliff. The bastard made it nearly impossible to reach him. Actually, now that he thought about it, the Seer was a genius. If it were possible to find a vacant section of Underworld this treacherous, he’d build his home there too. At least his enemies would be worn out by the time they knocked on his door.

Holy hell, how Jackie made this climb all the time was just one more thing to marvel about her.

The air changed, the higher he climbed. The rocks got sharper too. The cliff steeper.

Finally, he made it to the top. Dragging his body over the ledge, Chaos paused on his hands and knees to catch his breath. And I still have to get down again, he mused.

The Seer’s hut was dead ahead. Chaos stopped short of going in because he realized he’d just made a huge mistake. He hadn’t brought a trade. Shit!

“You’re late.” The Seer opened the flap to his hovel and stepped outside. Draped in a tattered cloak, he looked like a deteriorating wraith. “What have you brought me?”

“Nothing.” Chaos said honestly. Could he trade that virtue for what he needed? Probably not. Damnit.

“Then be gone.” The Seer ducked back into his home and closed the flap.

Fuck that bullshit. Chaos stormed in after him and didn’t care what it cost – an arm, his soul, an eye or even—

“I have a secret.” He wasn’t sure secrets were a currency for the Seer. The ancient male knew everything, or so he’d been told.

“Let me hear it,” the Seer sat and tapped his jagged nails on the tiny table.

“I claimed, Jackyl.”

The Seer hissed. “That’s no longer a secret. You’ve told that one to others already.”

It’s still a fucking secret, he thought angrily. Only Zeke knew about it.

“Secrets are things you’ve never shared with another soul.”

Chaos was at a loss. He had nothing to offer the Seer. Between Ruin and Jackie, all of Chaos’s secrets were known. If they didn’t know about them, like his underground dealings with kings and nobles with the fighter market, then each demon he made a deal with knew about what Chaos was up to. He literally had no secrets left to tell.

“I’ve wasted time coming here.” Annoyed, Chaos turned to leave.
