Chapter Eleven

Stephanie

It’s late into the evening, but Tyler is still at work when I find him. Wyatt is right next door, but I ignore him for the time being. I need to focus on Tyler a bit before I deal with Wyatt. It’s not that I’m avoiding the asshole next door. It’s that I’m trying to find the best way to deal with him.

The floor is empty except for the two of them, putting in overtime hours on some project. Rolling my shoulders, I shift into my corporeal form so Tyler can see me. His eyes widen in surprise, and he races to the door to shut it.

“What are you doing here?”

I smile at him. “Is it not visiting hours?”

Tyler’s lips twitch. “It’s just unexpected. I thought you only came at night.”

“I’ve visited you here before.”

His gaze narrows at me, and he cocks his head to the side. “I thought I was just seeing things.”

“You weren’t. I promise.” I sit on the couch, sliding my hands along my thighs as I wait to see what he’ll do. In the time since I was first given the orders to haunt, Tyler has changed so much. I can see the threads of who he once was before, but now those threads are blossoming into his whole person. “Come sit?”

Tyler nods and joins me, sitting close enough that our thighs touch. I’m hoping that the public office setting will help put him at ease and keep this as professional as possible. I don’t want to end up in the situation with Tyler that I have with Colin and Dusty.

“How is it going here? Well?”

“Well enough. Work keeps me busy. It’s a nice change from…before.” He hesitates as he adds in that last word, and I recognize the desire to avoid in an instant. I’ve pulled that one myself when dealing with my siblings.

“I can see how you’re different,” I whisper, hoping it lights him up. “You’re so much more confident now than you were before. You’re happier.”

“I am happier,” Tyler mutters. “And it’s all because of you.”

He locks his gaze onto mine, the sincerity in his look seeping into me. I shift uncomfortably. “It’s not because of me. All I did was tell you what you already knew. You did the work.”

Tyler shakes his head and cups my cheek, bringing our lips together in a tender kiss. “It’s because of you. If you hadn’t shown up, I don’t know where I’d be—but it wouldn’t be here.”

“Tyler,” I chastise, “before you even saw me, you came here to ask Wyatt for a job. It’s not because of anything I did. It’s because of you.”

I can see he wants to disagree with me, but he doesn’t say anything. Perhaps this singular battle is over. I hope he starts to learn how to have some of this confidence for himself, but I know it’ll be a long time before he makes those changes and relearns how to think about himself.

“You know, I think you’re doing a wonderful job here.
