Chapter Twenty-Two

Treves sat around the fire with his clansmen and Kardia, oiling his sword while the harpy glided through the intricate steps of some type of controlled martial art, her movements fluid and deadly. Beau, Masen and Coty, their own weapons in their laps, watched her shift through the sequence of slow kicks and punches with wary respect. Arriana, the Mer prince, and the old human had succumbed to sleep a short time earlier.

He studied the beautiful face of his sleeping fairy as she snored softly beside him, only a short span of desert sand separating them. He glanced up and caught the harpy watching him.

“You’re starting to care,” Kardia sighed, pulling her hands to her chest and rising out of the crouch she’d been in.

Treves swallowed, but decided to be honest. “She’s hard to resist.”

Kardia snorted softly and sat on her own pallet. “Always has been. I blame her size.”

Treves grinned. “Don’t forget the steel streak of stubborn hidden behind her blinding smile.”

Kardia gave one of her rare smiles as she nodded. “Yeah.” She looked up and her expression sobered. “If you’re not planning to complete the bond, don’t give her false hope. She doesn’t deserve that.”

Treves frowned, his gaze dropping back to his fairy’s peaceful face. “It isn’t a simple decision. I have more than our lives to consider.”

Coty and Masen nodded, both shooting him knowing glances, while Beau only shook his head, his expression sad.

Kardia grunted. “Even still.” She stood and disappeared into the darkness.

“That’s one scary female,” Masen muttered.

Coty grinned. “What’s wrong, brother? The ones who can kick your ass too intimidating?”

“I prefer coming out of a lover’s spat with my life, yes.”

They laughed until they realized Treves didn’t join them.

“If Coty can make it work, so can you, Trev?” Beau said.

Treves laughed, but the hollow sound lacked any humor. “If only it were that easy.”

Beau opened his mouth, but Treves just shook his head, ignoring the hollow ache in his chest. Beau’s shoulders fell.

Treves leaned forward, his forearms resting on his knees, then flicked a glance at Coty. “How’s Della?”

“Kortney says the baby will come about the time of the Regle’s birthday.” Coty’s shoulders dropped. “Fletcher rarely leaves her side, wanting every moment with her that he can.”

“It would have been better had they remained strangers simply doing their part to fulfill the contract,” Masen muttered.

Treves stared into the fire, unable to help agreeing with the gruff Shield. Fletcher had made peace with his death, seeking out a contract with Della to birth his son so his people’s numbers wouldn’t suffer when he ended his own life.

Neither had planned on falling in love, leaving Della to mourn his death. And the two weren’t even heartbonded. At least the child would have one parent to raise him, tell him stories about his father, and love him enough for both of them. Were he to complete the bond with Arriana, their child wouldn’t even have that.

Treves exhaled. “Arriana’s eldest sister and her human mate bonded the Forest Gate.
