Ifedayo Olarinde a.k.a Daddy Freeze: Has Authority Changed Hands Too?

Daddy Freeze has gained the love and hatred of many for his seemingly contrarian position on tithing and other Christian doctrines. Whether or not you agree with him, his position on tithing in Christianity was at a time the biggest conversation in the Nigerian social media space. That established him as a voice on church related matters. It did not come without backlash from those who held a different view from his, and that included some of Nigeria’s most notable clergy and their followers. But he never backed down. He calls himself the Convener of the Free the Sheeple Movement and Leader of the Free Nation. He is the archetype of the ability of social media to turn the tide against powerful and seemingly unquestionable church leaders. Even though he remains a radio broadcaster, he is better known these days for his views on Christian doctrines and actions of the clergy, both Nigerian and non-Nigerians alike, including some of the famous American ones. His voice is loud, but he is not a lone voice. His persistence on the tithe conversation helped him get the reaction he probably did not anticipate—church leaders firing not so subtle shots at “a blogger”, from the pulpit. These reactions went viral and, in my opinion, further gave credence to the influence of social media and Daddy Freeze, in particular, on the church.

This is not about the morality or how Christian (or un-Christian) such reactions are, but about the power of social media users to influence church messaging and sermons. On the preaching style, the era of monologues has ended, this is the era of the conversation. You have your say, and others will have theirs. The church and other religious organisations that have platforms where the congregation is allowed to ask questions and air even contrarian views will thrive in this new order. But it does not have to be the congregation alone, if you accept that what has become new is how you and your organisation are perceived by non-members; a perception that will ultimately influence and affect your members. If faith comes by hearing, doubt does too. So, if your members are constantly exposed to your unravelling on social media, ultimately, doubt could replace faith. When that happens, you start to see those who once swallowed everything you said hook, line and sinker start to question even your “good mornings”. I have seen such people become the greatest online antagonists to the same pastors they once used the same platforms to defend. Your audience has changed, how you pass your message cannot remain the same.
