The State of the World
Q. If there’s a God of love, why does He allow death and suffering?
A. The answer is in Genesis! The only way we can understand how to reconcile our world of death and suffering with a loving God, is when the Book of Genesis is taken as literal history.
The Bible makes it plain that at the end of the sixth day of creation, God pronounced His creation as VERY GOOD. There was no death of animals or man — no suffering, no disease — it was a perfect world.
However, our ancestor, the first man Adam, rebelled against the Holy Creator God. Thus, Adam forfeited his right (and therefore the right of all his descendants — which includes us) to live in perfect harmony with God.
Because God is holy, pure, and without sin — He had to judge man’s sin. Adam had been warned that death would be the penalty for rebellion. The death and suffering of this present world is a result of OUR sin! But we should also remember that God’s Son became a Man to suffer this death and be resurrected, so those who trust in Christ can live forever with Him.
Q. Why shouldn’t we blame God for death?
A. I believe that because much of the Church has been taught to believe in millions of years of earth’s history, Christians often don’t understand what death is all about.
You see, most people have been indoctrinated with the idea that the fossil record took millions of years to be laid down — that dinosaur bones are millions of years old, and so on.
Now when Christians believe this — and sadly, the majority probably do — then they’ve accepted that there were millions of years of death, suffering, and bloodshed before God made the first man.
Thus, they believe that God used the process of death and suffering over millions of years as part of the process of creation. So, when a loved one dies, it would be logical for these people to blame God for death.
However, Genesis makes it plain that death entered the world AFTER Adam sinned — it was a judgment BECAUSE of sin. The Bible describes death as an ENEMY. When a loved one dies, we should fall on our knees before our Holy God recognizing that death is in the world because WE sinned.
Q. How does death show that God is a God of love?
A. When the first man Adam rebelled against God, he forfeited his right to live with a Holy God. In fact, God had warned Adam that if he disobeyed the commandment not to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and Evil, he’d have to die.
Because Adam was the head of the human race, then all of his descendants fell with him when he rebelled. Thus, we’re all under the judgment of death because of sin. Because we’re made in God’s image, even though our body dies, we’ll still live forever. As sinners, we’d be separated from God forever.
