In this chapter we are looking at how prepositional phrases can be used as nouns, or nominals, in the sentence. That means the prepositional phrases will be subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, or predicate nominatives within the sentences. However, please be aware that not all grammarians will agree that prepositional phrases should be considered nominals, and these scholars will always interpret prepositional phrases as modifiers.

Examples of Prepositional Phrases as Nominals

Example: [During lunch] is an inconvenient time.

In this example, the prepositional phrase shown in brackets is being used as a noun, the subject of the sentence.
