A sentence is classified as
A simple sentence.
A complex sentence.
A Compound sentence.
A simple sentence has only one clause which is also the main clause. Thus a simple sentence has only one verb in the entire sentence.
A complex sentence has two or more clauses. One of them will be the main clause and all the other clauses will be subordinate clauses. A com0plex sentence will have as many evrbs as there are clauses.
A compound sentence also has two or more clauses. However, each clause is a main clause and is linked by a conjunction.
For example, consider these sentences:
John enjoys playing football. - A simple sentence – There is only one clause – the bverb here is ‘enjoys’.
People who reach their potential think in terms of improvement – A complex sentence – there are two clauses here – who reach their potential - is the dependant clause – People think in terms of improvement – Main clause.
If you have the money, you can travel – a complex sentence
Eat fruits and enjoy a healthy life – a compound sentence – Eat fruits – one sentence – Enjoy a healthy life – second sentence – ‘and’ is the conjunction.
