CHAPTER 15

“Looks like I win the bounty.” Though not as tall or beefy as the others before him, this Apostle was no less cocky. Since the last two Apostles I’d confronted did not live to tell the tale of my blade skills, perhaps that secret had yet to filter through to the rest of the church. On the flip side, I didn’t know the full extent of what they could do.

“Looks like you’ve run into trouble. Lucky me, you kept your head still attached to your body, or I’d lose my bonus.”

Hyun-woo did the manly thing and yanked my hand to pull me behind, but I resisted him. No more hiding behind anyone. Enough of that. The Apostles wanted me, and they had something I wanted. It was time to get this over with.

I had to swallow down the stinging pain in my side so my words would flow out with steel and not on a wheeze. “We were on our way to pay a visit before being rudely interrupted.”

My blood oozed through my fingers, pressed to my side. The effects of the sacred tiger’s attack still echoed through my head, and the skull’s power zapping curse drained my energy and ensured my stomach stayed pea small, but it was time. The past hour of experiences had stripped me raw, leaving me with little, even care.

“We’re going to do this.” I ignored Hyun-woo, shaking his head in my periphery. If only I could send him home. And this was not me being a martyr. Time I faced my problems on my own, not drag everyone I cared about into the same stinking arena to fight it out alongside me.

“Right on.” The Apostle sneered. Contrasted against his pale, baby-like skin, the lower part of his face was an interesting bluish grey from the shadow of a beard, looking like amateurish lead pencil shading. “Glad to see I don’t need to get my hands dirty for my fee.”

Yeah, yeah, talk on tough guy. Minutes ago, I had a sacred, powerful beast turn my brain into a liquified mess. Anything this guy said was toddler talk in comparison. And he’d yet to discover any magic he threw my way would waft on by in the breeze.

I stared at the Apostle while I debated whether what I wanted to do would work. Hyun-woo would be furious, but I needed to go it alone from here on in. This was not Hyun-woo’s war, nor the war of the long dead. I’d taken the shadows across the divide. Now I couldn’t risk Hyun-woo losing control of the long dead during the fight and setting them loose on Davenport.

This was a long shot. A wild idea, untested. However, during my last few zaps around the realms, courtesy of the skull, I’d rolled a thought around in my head. While laying there holding Hyun-woo tight, wanting with all my heart to suck his grief dry, I toyed with my idea further.

The Apostle turned to his side, quirked his eyebrows in a what’s the holdup gesture.
