TWENTY-THREE

Layla jolted awake at nine o'clock in the morning, soaked in breast milk and wrapped in Quin's arms, and she had a minor meltdown – a schizophrenic combination of happy, sad and guilty tears.

Quin was already awake and watching her lights, so he stroked her hair and kissed her head, waiting for her outburst to subside. Once it had, he leaned her back so he could clean up the spilled milk.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered, clumsily trying to help him. “Maybe I should wear a bra to bed.”

“Only if you want to, but our magic makes quick work of the mess. See?”

“It’s still a pain.”

“It's okay, Layla.”

“I know. I'm just blue.”

“Of course you are. Why don't you pump and get it out of the way. I’m going to take Belle out and fix breakfast. Then we'll eat before letting Serafin examine your neck.”

“Okay.” She kissed his chest before climbing out of bed, and he jumped out after her, following her to the bathroom. “I'm okay,” she assured, bracing herself on the doorjamb. “Just a little weak.”

“I know, and that's why I'm going to wait until you're back in bed before I leave this room.”

“It's unnecessary.”

“Humor me.”

“Okay,” she conceded, turning into the bathroom. Then she left the door open as she used it.

She didn’t even ask him to turn around, so he watched her wandering gaze while trying to figure out why she suddenly had no problem peeing in front of him. Once she was done and standing, he cleared his throat and stepped closer. “I have a question, love.”

“What's that?” she mumbled, observing her gaunt reflection.

He hesitated then charged on. “Why are you suddenly so immodest?”

“What do you mean?”

“For eight months you went out of your way to make sure I didn't see you pee. You even went so far as to suffer physical agony and extreme discomfort, and now you have no problem with it.”

“Oh,” she breathed, glancing from the toilet to his face. “Did it gross you out?”

“No,” he assured, taking her blushing cheeks. “It doesn’t bother me. I didn't even pay attention, but it surprises me and makes me wonder what's changed.”

“I don't know. I guess I got numb to the embarrassment of it. I didn't have a private toilet in my cell, just a partition.”

He straightened, his shoulders and jaw tightening. “So you always had people watching and listening?”

“No.”

She pulled away and headed for the bed, and his forehead wrinkled at her cold and confusing response. As he shadowed her across the room, he watched her aura, trying to figure out what she wasn't telling him. “I don’t understand,” he pressed.

Keeping her gaze averted, she climbed into bed. “The man who guarded me didn't watch me. In fact, he's the one who got me a partition.”

She passed Arabella over, and Quin laid a calming hand on the puppy’s head while watching Layla's profile, noting her tear laden eyes and quivering lips. She didn't offer any more information before jumping into the task of pumping her breasts, so he reluctantly dropped the subject and kissed her forehead.
