Chapter 16

I must have nodded off, during which time the guys took the time to clean me up after my time with Metatron. Slowly, I open my eyes and see Raphael lying next to me and Metatron curled tightly behind me, holding me to his chest. I reach out to Raphael and stroke his angelic face. His eyes slowly open, and he smiles. “Feel better, baby?” I simply nod at him.

Then, I look at the large arm over my rib cage. “I guess the big guy wasn’t ready to let go of me yet, huh?” I know the answer to the question before I ask it. If Metatron can hold on to me always, he would.

But being the good guy he is, he tries to be mindful that the others need me too. The guys worked out a good rotation between them. And everyone gets their night alone with me in our bed. With him being the newest, I understand his need is driven to prove he’s worthy to be in the bond. But to be perfectly honest, each of my mates brings their own uniqueness to the bond. Raphael brushes my hair away from my face, then leans forward to gently kiss me.

“We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to. I understand, after that performance, you might be a little sore, especially after alpha-locking him.” I nod along with his assessment, but I’m not as sore as I thought I’d be.

“I’m okay, Raph. Honestly.” When he just smiles again, I know something’s on his mind.

“What’s bothering you?” I ask as I play with a rogue strand of hair that refuses to stay out of his eyes.

“We have three more rings to get through. I’m concerned that the bulk of the angelic side might not handle this invasion well. They might not be able to deal with what’s to come.” I consider what he’s saying and get the hidden meaning behind it. For them to have to see their brethren who had previously fallen must be emotionally taxing on them. Those they’ve fought side by side with, possibly been roommates or bunkmates with over the centuries who have now fallen from grace and are unable to return to the Silver City.

“I get it,” I whisper as I feel Metatron stir behind me.

“When it’s time to go for Lucifer, if you guys feel you can’t handle it, it’ll be okay. I’ll be at my strongest in the ninth ring, drawing on the full darkness there. I don’t think Lucifer realizes the wheels he set in motion by killing my grandfather, Samael.” I feel Metatron’s fingers running through my hair, and he kisses my cheek from behind as he pulls himself out of the bed.

“You have our sword and shield, my love. Never forget that, but if you feel it’s safer for the angelic side to not follow you into the viper’s pit, then we’ll understand and accept.” His voice hesitates as he says the sentence, and I know full well he doesn’t mean what he says.
