Chapter 5

They left the crowded bistro. André’s arm draped Maya’s shoulder as they trudged up the narrow flights of stairs.

“The night seems especially warm.” André took off his hat and fanned his face at the top of the third flight. He dug through his pocket for the key and passed it to Maya. “Would you open the door, please?”

Maya glanced at the key and an eerie sensation stilled her hand. Should she repeat the actions that brought her here in the first place? Would slipping the key into the lock trigger a return to her true life? She glanced at André’s soulful face. There was no way she would voluntarily leave him, not now. Handling the key seemed too risky, so she deliberately allowed it to slide from her hand. It landed near André’s shoe with a soft clink. “Oops.” She held her breath in suspense. Would avoiding that one simple detail be enough to keep her in 1903 a little longer?

André bent down, picked up the key, and slid it into the lock.

Breathless, she waited for the flash of green light.

The door opened. Nothing happened. He motioned for her to enter. The loft was exactly as they had left it, with the wet canvases stacked against the wall. As she walked into the room, the earthy aroma of linseed oil wafted toward her with its reassuring scent. “That scent takes me back to art school,” she said with longing.

André set his hat and the burlap sack on a table. “You went to an art academy? Really?” He looked surprised. “Women are allowed to do that in America?”

“Er.” She bit her lip. “Yes, it’s common.”

“That’s interesting. There wasn’t a single female student at the art academy I attended, except for the models, and certainly no one as pretty as you. We got a few tipsy old jades if we were lucky enough to get a live model at all.” He paced a slow circle around her, rubbing his jaw and seemed to be absorbed in thought. “So do you paint or sculpt?”

“I dabble.” She dipped her chin to escape his intense gaze. At school, she’d found filling large canvases in a meaningful way too daunting and sculpting nearly impossible. “I love photography, pencil, and pastel. I tend to focus on delicate details.”

“Photography as art? How odd.” André looked pleased by her answer. “You are interesting. I’ve never met a woman photographer. This adds a whole other level to things. I’m very intrigued.” He crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked at her. “I’m going to give myself a challenge. Tonight I will paint you any way you choose to present yourself. As a fellow artist, I’m going to allow you to set the tableau.”

It was an incredible honor and intimidating too. “You’ll paint me any way I choose?”

His hand swept the air. “Anything. I will work with whatever creative ideas you wish to share.”

A creative collaboration with her idol? The magnitude of the offer was stunning. “Really?”

“Yes, really.
