Twenty-Two

With darkness falling quickly, it was hard for Benny to see from the bushes what, if anything, the two people approaching were up to. "I'm going to find out what's going on," he said. "Connie, if there's any sign of odd movement, get the twins out of here, fast."

Connie gave Benny a thumbs up, and Benny walked out from the bushes. "Greetings, my friend," he called.

Both of the newcomers turned around. One was tall and thin, and the other short and stocky. They exchanged a few words, and the short one approached Benny.

He was small, but had broad shoulders and thick arms, and seemed a force to be reckoned with. His head was covered with thick, black curly hair, and his beard matched, except for the sprinkling of gray here and there. He extended a hand to Benny and they shook.

"Good to see you, my friend," the man said.

"Gavin, I appreciate you coming and offering your help," Benny said and looked in the direction of the tall thin figure. "But why would you bring her?"

Gavin looked at the ground, sighed, and then focused on Benny again. "I know what you think of Lisa," he said. "But you are wrong."

Benny shook his head. "Are you trying to tell me she's here to help?"

"I can tell you that she's not here to hinder things."

Benny began to pace in front of Gavin. "And how can you be sure?" he asked.

"Lisa's always been neutral," Gavin said.

Benny stopped pacing and walked close to Gavin. He spoke softly. "You know what her husband was; you can't possibly believe that they didn't share similar views."

Gavin put a hand on each of Benny's shoulders. "I can only tell you that the fact that I am here and having this conversation is proof that she means no harm. She's known for some time that I have been giving you information, and she has never uttered a single word about it."

Benny sighed. "Why is she here now?"

"She's concerned for the welfare of the twins," Gavin replied.

Benny's eyes went wide. "She knows they're here? She knows about Ray and Tina?"

Gavin sighed. "My friend, the capture of the parents of the destined ones is not something that Tardon has kept secret. He wants all who follow him to know that he can handle any threat to his grand plans."

Benny looked at Gavin for a moment. "And you're convinced that she's concerned for the twins?"

"I am," Gavin said. "After all, she is family."

Lisa had grown impatient and walked over to the two men. She announced her arrival. "I don't like standing in the dark alone," she said. "If you gentlemen are done with your hellos, I'd like to meet my niece and nephew."

Lisa was tall and thin, just like her brother Ray. She had long, sandy-colored hair that she had tied back in a long ponytail. Her nose was thin and long, and she lifted it to the sky when she spoke.

"Lisa," Benny said, remembering his manners. "You're looking well."

"Yes, yes," Lisa said as she looked around.
