Chapter 13

The moment the door shut, I dropped to my knees beside Jacob, the crackling power vanishing from my palms. I cupped his face, my pulse racing, fear consuming my rage. God, his skin was so cold, colder now because Victoria or Sebastian’s icy fear had left the room, and his eyes were squeezed tight in agony. Blood wept from the gashes on his chest, and his body shook as he drew desperate ragged breaths that were too far apart.

“Jacob.” Come on. Wake up. I didn’t know how powerful Sebastian’s sleep spell was, but I knew if Jacob didn’t feed now, he was going to die. “Please, Jacob. Wake up.”

I didn’t want a repeat of the pain I’d experienced when I’d saved Jacob after the archnephilim had nearly killed him and he’d bitten me without his magic, but it didn’t look as if I had much choice.

Jacob convulsed, his back arching off the bed, and screamed again, the agony tearing at my soul. The veins in his neck bulged and his face turned red. He gasped in a breath, then went limp, his chest still.

No. “Jacob.”

He wasn’t breathing.

No no no. He wasn’t going to die. He couldn’t. Everything within me howled at the idea of losing him. Just like when Gideon had been dying, my soul was shattering. I couldn’t lose him. I couldn’t.

“Just hold on. Please. Hold on.”

I entwined my fingers to do CPR — which, if I’d actually thought about it, was ridiculous because he’d never had a heartbeat to begin with — but he sucked in a strangled breath before I could do the first compression or figure out what else I could do to save him.

I wrenched my gaze away from him to search the opulent room for something I could use to slit my wrist. There wasn’t time to wait for him to fully wake up. I didn’t know if he’d wake up.

Victoria didn’t just happen to have knives sitting out — although it wouldn’t have surprised me if she had some somewhere — which meant I was going to have to break one of the glasses on her sidebar.

I jerked to my feet, but Jacob seized my wrist and wrenched me back. I fell onto my butt beside him. His dark gaze locked with mine, filled with wild, powerful intensity. Its weight crushed inside me like Victoria’s had, except his didn’t scare me, his filled me with determination and yearning and heartache.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he gasped.

“Neither should you.”

His attention jumped to my cheeks, where Victoria had dug in her nails and blood still dampened my skin. The intensity turned hungry, the monstrous nature, akin to Victoria’s, that he’d always kept hidden now fully revealed, and his lips curled back revealing his fangs.

“Essie.” A convulsion seized him, and he dug his claws — not nearly as big as a shifter’s but just as sharp — into my wrist. “Essie, please.”

Agony and fear swept through me, and a cold mist enveloped me. He was in such pain, his heart broken, his body breaking.
