Chapter Eight

Coco sat in the lounge contemplating her root beer when her friend walked in. Joy was a spirit of Christmas Future and the purest of all of them. Sometimes Coco felt a bit frumpy next to Joy’s put together appearance, but she was such a sweet soul, she made everyone comfortable. Coco waved.

Joy joined her. “What happened to that beautiful dress you were wearing earlier?”

Coco looked down at her jeans and red Christmas long-sleeved t-shirt with Cindy Lou Who on it. “I traded with my client who was wearing a robe. I thought a pair of jeans was a bit better apparel for work.”

“I would agree. Do I dare ask?”

Coco shook her head. “Let’s just say that it has a lot to do with Ian Fergusson.”

Joy’s smile faltered. That was so rare that Coco tensed. Maybe she shouldn’t pry into Ian’s life after all. Then again, it was a bit too late for that. She’d already discovered what happened in the Glasgow flat thanks to a rather talkative Mrs. Ferrisletter.

“How can I help you?”

Coco cocked her head. “I figured out, or I think I have, why Ian Fergusson is so distant. He blames himself for not saving his suicidal fiancée.”

Joy’s smile was sad.

“I also discovered that not only did her family blame him, but his own family did as well, and the whole tragedy was covered in the press, who also blamed him.”

“It was a tragic event for all involved.”

Coco nodded in agreement, crushing her need to defend Ian. She didn’t have enough information yet to do that.

Joy sat patiently waiting. Coco was almost afraid to ask, but she just had to know. “Could you tell me, if Ella hadn’t met Ian, would she still be alive today?”

Joy shook her head. “Oh my, no. Ella would have taken her own life no matter who she was with. She had a severe chemical imbalance and though the medications that were prescribed for her worked, they also put her in a haze.”

Coco’s hope grew. “She didn’t like taking them, I gather?”

“Not like it?” Joy leaned in to whisper. “She flushed her medicine down the toilet so her family wouldn’t know she skipped it.” Joy sat straight again. “It was a matter of time for Ella. The poor dear was terribly unhappy. I don’t understand why some people have to be born with such a weight to bear.”

She didn’t understand it either, but she was unashamedly more worried about Ian. “So Ian isn’t being punished for what happened?”

“What?” Joy’s eyes rounded. “No one here is punished. We are here because we have the potential to still help the living. Why would you think Ian is being punished?”

More to the point, why did Ian feel that.

“Coco, are you interested in Ian?” Joy’s look was cautious.

“You mean because he’s an arrogant asshole who’s friendly to no one?”

Her friend laughed, the sound like the gurgling of a small brook as the water wound between the stones. “I see you are quite aware of his personality.”

She rolled her eyes.
