“I am inspired when someone has the courage to walk their path; and when I share my path and process, maybe someone else will think, ‘If she can do it, so can I.’ It’s a thought; it’s a beginning.”

“ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY IS A WEEKLY CREATIVE OUTLET AND PARTICIPATORY ART EXHIBIT FOR ARTISTS OF ALL SKILL LEVELS. WE BELIEVE THAT EVERY PERSON HAS A LITTLE CREATIVE BONE IN THEIR BODY. ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY JUST GIVES A NO-PRESSURE, FUN EXCUSE TO USE IT … A CHANCE TO EXPERIMENT, EXPLORE AND PLAY.” –ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY WEBSITE
With the click of a mouse, it is monumentally easy for me to keep track of what my fellow artists, entrepreneurs and dreamers are up to. While I wish I had the time and energy to maintain closer connections with those who live farther away, I am grateful for the opportunities blogs and websites provide to keep the channels of inspiration between myself and women around the world wide open. Penelope Dullaghan, who lives more than two thousand miles away, has been a steady source of inspiration for me ever since I met her at a retreat I organized in 2006, just over two years after she launched Illustration Friday (IF), a website that has opened one of the most meaningful and inspiring channels of inspiration available online.
“I started Illustration Friday because I was feeling pretty isolated in my home studio and wanted to connect with other creative people,” explains Penelope. “I’d also heard that when you start out as a freelance illustrator it’s wise to only show work that you want to do more of. So I started IF to pad my portfolio with fun work.” Each week a new topic is posted and e-mail alerts are sent out. Participants post their submissions on the IF website, which enables viewers to browse submissions by medium and style, read artist interviews, participate in ongoing art forums, and enjoy the contributions of ten different IF bloggers. What started as a simple weekly invitation to create blossomed into a bona fide movement, with nearly one thousand participants each week from all over the world. “With IF, my goal is to inspire people to create for the sake of creating,” says Penelope. “I feel fortunate to be able to offer the site as inspiration, and even more so because participants inspire me as well.”
Receiving a new creative pebble each week, with ripples spreading far and wide, participants are inspired to toss in their own pebbles, which create new waves that crisscross, overlap and make their way right back to Penelope. Literally tens of thousands of new creations have been executed and shared through IF, a virtual library of artistic adventures.
