Chapter Nine

AnnaBeth fiddled nervously with a thread that had come loose from her jeans. She sat in her mother’s office, or rather what Inari had created with magic to serve as her office. AnnaBeth had inherited a minute amount of magic from her mother, but since she was only half human she would never be able to match her mother’s power. That wasn’t the only reason AnnaBeth was terrified of her.

The office was the most dreadful place that her mother could conjure to speak to AnnaBeth. She hated this room. There was no use trying to hide her discomfort, Inari could read her aura like a book whether AnnaBeth was masking it or not. She had long ago decided it was better not to waste her energy on things she couldn’t stop. She was probably going to need every bit of her guile to get out of this meeting without taking a severe beating. She could tell by the way the room was set that her mother wasn’t very happy with her.

Inari’s desk sat in the middle of the whitewashed room, as it always did. It was a large oak desk that would hide most of her mother’s petite body behind it. Aside from the desk and the chair that AnnaBeth was sitting in there was only one other thing in the room. It was an unassuming object, but it was in every single world that her mother created. Sometimes it appeared more present than other times, but it was always close to where Inari would inevitably appear. AnnaBeth had no idea what was inside the locked trunk that was only slightly bigger than a shoebox, but she knew that her mother guarded it with ferocity. AnnaBeth found that out the hard way when she was only seven years old. She’d been playing in one of the rooms her mother had created and she’d found the box in a rare moment that it was unguarded. She’d tried for nearly an hour to pry open the little lock that held it shut. She realized it was sealed with magic only a second before her mother popped into the created world and found her. It was one of the worst beatings her mother had ever given her. Now AnnaBeth was uncomfortable just looking at that box.

This setup was all part of her mother’s plans to make her feel as uncomfortable as possible. That box always made AnnaBeth uneasy and by eliminating everything else in the room it was all she could focus on. Inari knew it would make it easier to get whatever information she wanted out of AnnaBeth. Not that she wouldn’t just give it to her anyway, but her mother either didn’t trust her or just didn’t trust the fear she’d instilled in AnnaBeth to leave it to chance.

“We have a lot to talk about,” Inari’s voice pulled her attention away from the box to where she now sat behind the desk. Even though AnnaBeth knew her mother could appear
