Often criticized for being a promiscuous drug addict, Aleister Crowley was the founder of Thelema, preaching that you should pursue your individual path in life.

Crowley was an object of obsession for many future writers, artists, and even rock stars such as Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, who lived in one of Crowley’s homes and delved into the study of the occult, as well. The association of Crowley, black magic, and rock music proved a potent one, as it spurred many fans of the band to look into, and begin to practice, the occult arts. But that seems to suggest more the power of pop culture than of the Devil himself.

Theosophy

Like Gnosticism, Theosophy seeks direct knowledge of the mysteries of life, nature, and the divine. More of a body of teachings than just one specific path, Theosophy is an esoteric tradition with definite Western roots. The word comes from the Greek theosophia, which combines theo, or God, with Sophia, or wisdom. Though the word was used to describe early “theology,” or religious teachings, it came into its own as a mystery school of teaching during the Renaissance, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when it took on many of the aspects of pure Gnosticism and the search for individual enlightenment through inner knowing. Yet until the nineteenth century it was not truly meant to indicate a Gnostic belief system.
